Long time ago my father took me to an exhibition of the Swiss kinetic artist Jean Tinguely. I was mesmerized by the experience. You could say that this was the beginning of my love affair with art.
In 2016 there was an exhibition by Tinguely in Amsterdam so I had to go and see it. This time as an adult. Still after all those years, the experience was amazing and intriguing. Back home I studied his life story and tried to find out what this guy was about.
It turned out he stands for many things that I personally feel are quintessential for life. His life story reads like a great adventure novel. He and his partner Niki de Saint Phalle were known as the Bonnie and Clyde of the modern art world. How romantic! It’s inspiring to see people live their life unorthodox, adventurous , at times a bit destructive and with little respect for false authority.
Having had a bit more life experience behind me, I also sensed there was something else that life wanted to tell me. So I started to edit the film material that I shot. Not really knowing what kind of story it would become. It turned out that there was an underlying level of understanding that became an important lesson of life to me. The result is in the movie below.
I speak Dutch in this movie but added English subtitles for an international audience.
